Florida Trail Thru-Hike Day 6 “Trip and Fall”
Today is my 36th birthday so hopefully all of the forest animals will offer to carry my packs for the day! I climb out of my tent to check the stick at the waters edge to see the water had dropped over two feet, what a difference that would have made yesterday. The river was rushing by pretty fast and the fog was following along for the ride. I get my camera out to try to catch this image. [caption id="attachment_1036" align="aligncenter" width="578" caption="Blackwater River Fog"][/caption] Hoping to stick to my plan and get more Photographs today we head off back up the ...
Florida Trail Thru-Hike Day 5 “Water Slogging”
The packs feel much better today after a few alterations and a few less pounds. As I walk through the woods taking in the beauty I wonder what lay ahead what condition the trail is in after the rain. The terrain was quickly changing from higher grassy areas to "Green Tunnels". We kept passing small puddles, a hint of what lay ahead, then we come across a small boardwalk made of 4 x 6's as a little stream passed under us. We then splash through a few wet areas with water just under the top of my boots, still dry ...
Florida Trail Thru-Hike Day 3 and 4 “Rain”
I laid in my tent awake waiting for a hint of morning light wondering about the weather and Hurricane Ida. I was hoping I would be able to make it to the next camp before the rain came. When I got up Greg (my neighbor) was already packing his campsite up. Greg told me the storm was coming pretty fast and it would be raining in a couple of hours. Greg offered to bring me into town to a hotel and bring me back as soon as the weather cleared up. I called my parents to let them know I made ...
Florida Trail Thru-Hike Day Two Hurricane Lake
Day Two November 8th, 2009 Hurricane Lake It was a long night, Diego got upset a few times about something outside, his low rumbling growl growing to a snarl and then he let out a few nasty barks. Whats out there? Then a crash in the bushes within 100ft, it sounded big. I listened closely for a minute but not so much as a leaf crackle. I got up put on my sandals and with Diego by my side we went outside to investigate. I shined my flashlight every direction looking for the reflection of eyes or any hint of a ...
Florida Trail Thru-Hike Day One “Torture”
My Brother, Nick and my nephew Ian drove me the two and a half hour drive from his house in Alabama to the trail head at the Alabama-Florida state line, after navigating our way around a washed out road we were on a single lane red clay forest road in his white (now two-tone with a red clay lower half) Suburban. Working our way through a few slippery rutted puddles in this big two-wheel drive SUV. With muddy ditches on both sides of us that few four wheel drive vehicles would climb back out of after a misjudgment and dreaded ...
